ARTICLE DESCRIPTION:

Mid-Prairie’s Paige Slabaugh finished off her career with a state meet bid and an 18th place finish in the Class 2A.

Slabaugh qualified as an individual for the two-day meet at Lake Panorama National Golf Course and shot a 92 the first day of the tournament. Her coach, Tracy McArtor, said that despite a rough day on the tees she made the best of the round.

“She really struggled off the tee, so to be able to post the score she did was a real tribute to how good she is at scrambling,” McArtor said. “That round could have very easily been 100 or more, and she battled through it.”

Slabaugh worked to correct that on day two and hit every fairway on the front nine. She improved her score by one stroke and finished with a 91 for a total of 183. That put her in a tie for 18th place alongside Ruthie Jahn of Mediapolis and Addisen Lytle from Columbus Catholic.

“I know she didn’t feel like she played her best golf this week, but under the conditions and her competition she should really be proud of herself,” McArtor said.

The individual title was won by Dike-New Hartford’s Morgan Weber who shot a 148, 12 strokes better than the second place medalist.

With Slabaugh’s last meet in the books, McArtor said he can’t say enough about how hard Slabaugh works.

“We will definitely have some big shoes to fill next year with Paige moving on, but I’m excited she has another four years of competition at the college level,” McArtor said.

Slabaugh signed a letter of intent to play golf at Millikin University in Decatur, Ill., next year.

Her low this year on a nine-hole round was a 43 with an 46-stroke average across nine nine-hole rounds. On 18-hole rounds she averaged an 89 and had a low of 82.
