ARTICLE DESCRIPTION:

A snowstorm that dropped about a foot of wet, heavy snow on Nov. 25 presented challenges to the city’s snow removal efforts.

Kalona City Councilman Greg Schmidt said during Monday’s council meeting that he received a number of calls about snow removal.

Schmidt asked if the city had a set plowing protocol.

“Each snow event has a uniqueness,” City Administrator Ryan Schlabaugh said.

He pointed out that the city’s goal is to first focus in primary streets like A and B avenues.

He added that in this storm, the city also had to help maintain Highway 22 because state plows got pulled off due to accidents.

“Side streets don’t get top priority,” Schlabaugh said. “In this event, we had all we could do to keep up with the main streets.”

Schlabaugh said that the city is currently renting a box plow, an attachment that goes onto the city’s backhoe to test its effectiveness.

He said that it helped street crews save time clearing downtown streets.

Mayor Ken Herington praised the city’s snow-clearing effort.

“This town does a good a job as anyone around,” Herington said.
