ARTICLE DESCRIPTION:

Thursday evening June 21 brought new sounds to the Kalona Public Library. The first of a four-concert series took place in the Velma Skola program room. It was the kickoff of a four-concert outdoor series. However, the weather prevented the “outdoor” part of the evening’s concert. The patrons of the library were serenaded by Larry Mossman and Kathy Maxey of Iowa City with their traditional folk songs. They brought several instruments and traded them throughout the evening depending on the type of song.

Instruments included a mandolin, tenor guitar, guitar, and melodica.

Members of the public wandered in and out all evening and that is exactly what the library staff had hoped for. They wanted this to be a social and family-friendly activity and can’t wait for the rest of the series.

The rest of the scheduled outdoor concerts are as follows: Thursday, June 28 at 6 p.m. pianist Josh Sazon, Thursday, July 19 at 6 p.m. ukelele player Jessica Egli, and Thursday, July 26 at 6 p.m., the Heartstrings Fiddle Group. All concerts will take place on the library’s east lawn, weather permitting, so bring your own chair or blanket to sit on.
