ARTICLE DESCRIPTION:

The Lone Tree Lions were firing on all cylinders Friday night as they closed out their season with a dominant wire-to-wire 55-32 road win against the English Valleys Bears.

The Lone Tree offense and defense took turns lighting up the scoreboard – and they started early.

On the first play of the game, Dwayne Drayfahl recovered a fumbled Bears snap in the end zone for a touchdown.

The Lone Tree defense played strong against a Bears’ offense that had scored more than 70 points twice this season and once scored 80 points in a game.

“I was very pleased with the way our defense played on Friday night,” Lone Tree head coach Aaron Bohr said. “English Valleys has lit up the scoreboard against several teams this season, and besides a slow start and a couple big plays, our defense did an excellent job.”

The Bears answered with a touchdown at the 7:10 mark of the first quarter, but just over a minute later the Lions countered with a 24-yard Brady Dauber touchdown run.

With just under a minute left in the period, Avery Knock picked off an English Valleys pass near midfield.

On the first play of the second quarter, Knock cashed in with a 17-yard touchdown run, tip-toeing down the sideline.

After another Bears touchdown, the teams traded fumbles, with the Lions’ defense making the most of their recovery. Cale Yoder rumbled 66 yards to paydirt after recovering a Bear fumble.

Lone Tree scored two more times to take a 41-12 lead into halftime.

English Valleys tallied the only score of the third quarter to close the gap to 41-18.

On the first play of the fourth quarter, Bryce Houser scored from 5 yards out.

A half a minute later, Knock recovered a Bear fumble on the Lone Tree 2-yard line.

After an English Valleys touchdown halfway through the period, Lone Tree’s Harmon Miller hit Keegan Edwards for a 45-yard touchdown pass.

The Lions ended their season with an overall record of 4-5.

“I can’t imagine any team in the state had a more difficult slate of opponents to start the season, and starting the season at 1-5 was tough especially since we all aspired to return to the playoffs,” Bohr said. “Despite this, I feel we grew as a team and played our best football toward the end of the year when we had nothing but pride to play for.”
