BGM used a pair of Highland turnovers and over 200 rushing yards to defeat the Huskies 31-22 in the Class A District 6 opener.

The Bears were able to carve up the Highland defense on the ground, with Noah Beck collecting 206 yards on 30 carries. He scored all four touchdowns for BGM and the bears added three more points on a 20-yard field goal.

The Huskies had an early lead after Cole Adamson bolted down the field 79-yards on the Huskies second offensive play. That gave Highland a 7-0 lead halfway into the first quarter.

BGM tied the game 7-7 with 1:56 left in the first half on a 16-yard run from Beck. The Bears blocked a Highland punt, but weren’t able to find the endzone before the end of the half.

The Highland offense continued to struggle in the third quarter, punting on both of their possessions. BGM on the other hand, scored two touchdowns in the quarter to take a 21-7 lead.

The Huskies scored on the first play of the fourth quarter on a 34-yard pass from Lasek to Jordan Sosa to make the game a one possession game. BGM responded with a six-play drive that resulted in a 20-yard field goal, pushing it back to two possessions.

Highland’s next possession ended in a 1-yard touchdown rush for Lasek. The key play on the drive came on a screen pass from Lasek to McFarland. McFarland made a few defenders miss and gained 52 yards on the play. On the extra point, a broken play was solved after Lasek tossed a pass to Stewart who made a nice grab. The score was 24-22 BGM with 6:54 left.

Highland then took a chance, going for an onside kick. BGM recovered and scored a touchdown two minutes later to make the score 31-22.

The next play BGM picked off a Lasek pass and were able to run down the clock to 1:05 before turning it over. Highland moved a little down the field, but ran out of time.

Brooklyn moves to 5-0 on the season with the win. The loss puts Highland at 4-1 and 0-1 in district play. The loss doesn’t eliminate Highland from the playoffs, but likely makes a game at Pekin next week a must win.
