ARTICLE DESCRIPTION:

Salt Lake City, Utah, provided great weather as living organ donors and recipients participated in this year’s Transplant Games of America, Aug. 2-7.

One of the competitors was Kalona’s own Myron Thirtle, who came home with five gold medals and one bronze medal. Thirtle participated in track and field, doubles bowling, darts and cricket.

“The best part of the day was not winning these medals and bringing them home,” said Thirtle. “The best part was meeting new people at the event and sharing our stories with one another as we shed some tears.”

Thirtle became a living organ donor after finding out that his dad was in need of a new kidney. He and his father had a successful kidney transplant Aug. 31, 2000, but his father died a few years later after battling cancer.

After his father’s death, Thirtle looked for support through an organ transplant group through the University of Iowa. It was through this group where he learned about the Transplant Games of America, and has competed in the annual event ever since.
