ARTICLE DESCRIPTION:

Sixty-four were in attendance at the annual Mellecker-Birrer reunion held on Aug. 6 at St. Mary’s church basement in Riverside.

Marcia Mellecker led the grace before the bountiful noon potluck.

The afternoon was spent visiting, reminiscing, taking photos, show and tell and looking at the large display of photos, memorabilia and genealogy records.

Katy Simon was in charge of the show and tell. The subject was Katy’s grandfather, Joseph Mellecker. Katy told about Joseph’s life of farming, etc. She showed memorabilia, newspaper articles, etc. that she had in her possession.

Eileen Yotty talked about and showed a wooden box which Joseph and his wife Magdalene used for moving their possessions after their wedding day. Also a sewing box that her grandmother gave to her on her sixteenth birthday. Magdalene had received it for her sixteenth birthday in 1892.

Mary Lou Herkulic brought a newspaper article about Jack Fisher formerly of Louisville, Colorado who was going to launch in orbit into outer space on April 20. Jack Fisher’s aunt is Anita Mellecker Fisher, daughter of the late Leonard and Louella Mellecker.

Marcia Mellecker told about starting to clean the rectory at St. Joseph’s in Hills. She felt she was following her grandmother Magdalene’s footsteps as she walks throughout the rectory. Magdalene was Fr. Horans housekeeper from 1943 to 1953. Eileen Yotty, Katy Simon and Lois Zeman all told about spending time at the rectory with their grandmother helping her clean or having breakfast with Fr. Horan and Magdalene.

Several in attendance shared short memories or stories during show and tell.

The oldest in attendance was Delores Latta and the youngest was 3 month old Emmy Schultz.

Those traveling the farthest were Hollie Higgs of Delroy Beach, Florida and Robert, Debbie, Diederichsen and Allene and Jonathan Shapiro of Monassas, Virginia.

Twenty recipients received doorprizes of garden produce, eggs or preserved fruit which were provided by Melody Mellecker, Marcia Mellecker and Katy Simon.
