ARTICLE DESCRIPTION:

The Mid-Prairie baseball team exited the postseason with a 10-2 loss to Wilton, Class 2A's top team, on Tuesday, July 12.

On July 6, Adam Schrock held the Beavers to four hits in a 2-1 loss, but the Wilton batters had much more success the second time seeing Schrock, and scored three runs in each of the first two innings.

An error and a hit batter loaded the bases for Mid-Prairie in the third inning. Schrock drove in two runs with a two-out single to close the gap to 6-2, but Wilton’s Javin Drake struck out 13 batters and allowed just three hits to keep the Golden Hawks from getting closer.

Wilton had four seniors at the top of the lineup, who combined for seven of the Beavers’ 12 hits. Schrock will graduate, but the rest of the Golden Hawks will return next season.

Mid-Prairie was playing its best baseball in the second half of June, going 6-3 over the two-week stretch after a 6-11 start to the season.

While Adam Schrock led the team in batting average, hits, and innings pitched, young players stepped up and contributed as well.

Keaton Duwa led the team with 23 RBI, hit .307 and had the team’s only home run through 28 games. Karson Gingerich batted .312 with an on-base-percentage of .480.

One of the biggest areas of improvement for the Golden Hawks this season was the defense. Mid-Prairie went from the second worst fielding percentage in the RVC South a year ago to second best in 2016. Junior outfielders Braeden Nielsen and Derek Rich had just one error each all season to lead a young team in the field.
