Mid-Prairie school board member George Schaefer has resigned his position.

No reason was given when the resignation was announced Monday night at the school board meeting.

Schaefer sent a letter to school board members and Superintendent Mark Schneider announcing his resignation.

Schaefer, reached Tuesday morning, said it “was just time to do it.”

He said he has been on the board for about 10 years and decided it was the right time to step down.

“Last night, my wife and I enjoyed a wonderful Monday night,” Schaefer said, referring to the school board meeting he missed.

At the board meeting Monday, President Jeremy Pickard said he would be contacting candidates who previously ran for school board seats to gauge their interest in filling this vacancy.

Anyone wishing to be considered for the opening should contact district Business Manager Jeff Swartzentruber by July 9.

The board will need to appoint someone to fill the spot within 30 days or a special election will be triggered.

A special election can be requested by a petition to the school board.
