ARTICLE DESCRIPTION:

At its meeting Monday, April 2, the Kalona City Council heard about progress on the new Kalona Community Center.

Nick Liston from Carl A. Nelson & Co., who are in charge of the project, told council members the project is roughly 60 percent completed.

“We’re on schedule,” he said. “Albeit, there are some areas where we ate up all the so-called fluff time we had.”

Liston said the building would be open by Aug. 22, just in time for Kalona Days.

“We’ve got a good plan in place, and we’re making sure the contractors are coordinated and understand what’s going on,” he said. “We talk weekly with Ryan about where we’re at with the budget as well.”

City Administrator Ryan Schlabaugh said he was cautiously comfortable with where the city was sitting in regards to the budget.

“We have roughly $35,000 left in the budget,” Schlabaugh said. “But we’re beyond the point where we can do any major renovations so most of the changes are included in the contingency fund.”

At Monday’s meeting, council members approved an adjustment of pay application for Ace Electric in the amount of $85,921.80 for a variety of things, including moving AC condensers to the roof, second floor restroom fixtures and exterior lighting.

The total project cost as of April 2 for the new Kalona Community Center was $5,360,963.
