Iowa City Regina took advantage of streakiness from the Golden Hawks to win a conference match sweep over Mid-Prairie.
The Regals won 3-0 (25-20, 25-14, 25-12) over Mid-Prairie as the Golden Hawks dropped to 0-2 in the River Valley Conference standings. Despite the loss, there were periods of brilliance for the Mid-Prairie offense.
During the second set, there was a 10-point stretch where Mid-Prairie’s Tori Boyse seemed to take over the game, either contributing with a kill or a block on every point. She finished the night with seven kills and two blocks.
“I was feeling it and I was just ready to win,” Boyse said. “It just felt really good at that point.”
After a slow start in the second set and facing a 9-2 deficit, the Golden Hawks fought back and forced a Regina timeout with a score of 16-13. The Regals then reeled off a huge streak to win the set 25-14.
“I think our mood changed. We thought we couldn’t do it anymore because the score wasn’t where we wanted it to be,” Boyse said.
Mid-Prairie head coach Cindy Miller said after the game she pointed to that stretch and hopes when a player catches fire the rest of the team can rally with them.
“I wish there was a magical way, but I think as we play a little better they’ll feed into it,” Miller said.
The Regals were in large part powered by Jaedynn Evans, who had 20 kills on 40 percent efficiency.
After the game, Mid-Prairie coach Cindy Miller didn’t pull any punches with her team. She let them know that something has to get better or 3-0 sweeps will be in the cards for the Golden Hawks in a tough River Valley Conference.
“It was tough because our passing was just not good tonight. We were never in our system and when you’re not in system you can’t expect your setter to run every which way,” Miller said.
The Golden Hawks traveled to Tipton on Tuesday and travel to Wilton on Thursday.
