ARTICLE DESCRIPTION:

The after-school 4-H STEM Club has 20 Highland Elementary second and third graders excited to learn, explore and build for the ocean.

Students met Oct. 16 and 23 after school to learn about ocean engineering before designing their own submersibles.

The participants defined submersibles, what would be valuable components of one, and learned the importance of researching the ocean bottom.

They defined topography and used a model sounding stick and ocean bottom to make their own topography maps. They have started testing materials for sink or float characteristics.

Washington County Extension and 4-H and Highland ESO are partnering together to offer this 4-H STEM Club after school.

November will offer a STEM Club to fourth and fifth grade students.

“Taking the Plunge” is taught by Sonya Stanerson and assistant Maria Meller with support from Washington County Extension and Outreach.
