The city of Kalona will seek a grant to purchase a protective covering for the gym floor in the new Kalona Community Center.

The City Council gave the go-ahead Monday night to apply for a grant from the Washington County Riverboat Foundation.

City Administrator Ryan Schlabaugh said that the total cost of the 10,000 square feet of protective flooring would be $25,000.

“We’re looking to get $20,000 from the Riverboat Foundation,” Schlabaugh said. “The city’s commitment would be $5,000.”

The deadline to submit grant applications to the WCRF is Oct. 3.

The flooring is similar to what is used to cover the gym floor for non-sports events at Mid-Prairie High School.

Schlabaugh explained that the flooring is needed in the Community Center so the center can host large non-sports events.

One such event is the Kalona Optimist Halloween party, which the council also approved Monday night.

Schlabaugh said that for the Halloween event, the city received permission from the school district to borrow its floor covering.

He added that he expects “a couple hundred” kids to attend the Halloween party.
