ARTICLE DESCRIPTION:

1928 - 2017

Richard Bryan Cress, 89, of Urbana, Ill., formerly of Hoopeston, Ill., passed away Friday Dec. 22, 2017, at Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana. A time of food and fellowship will be held at Trinity United Methodist Church in Riverside on Monday, Jan. 15, 2018, at 11 a.m. Following the luncheon, a graveside service for Richard will be held at the Riverside Public Cemetery at 1 p.m. Memorials may be made to the Hoopeston United Methodist Church, 403 E. Main St., Hoopeston, IL 60942.

He was born Jan. 15, 1928, in Miami, Fla., the son of Gerald and Bird (Bryan) Cress. He married Rose Marie Mellecker on Aug. 28, 1950, at the Little Brown Church in the Vale, Nashua, Iowa.

Richard drove a truck for Central Steel and Wire for 40 years, before his retirement. He was a very devoted member of the Hoopeston United Methodist Church, where he served on the administrative board and as a trustee. Along with his wife, he was a large supporter and participated in many of the church mission trips. Richard was the go-to guy for maintenance around the church. He took great pride in the odd jobs it took to maintain both the church and surrounding grounds. His hobbies included golfing and fishing in Minnesota and taking great care of his home and yard. Richard will be lovingly remembered as a very devoted, loving and caring father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend.

He is survived by one daughter: Donna Crose of Urbana; three sons: Ron (Diane) Cress of Zionsville, Ind., Brian (Jane) Cress of Bismarck, Ill., and Brad (Jan) Cress of Cornwall, England; seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife: Rose Marie; and one sister: Bette Myers.

Online condolences for the Cress family may be sent to www.lewisfuneralhomes.com. The Sorden-Lewis Home for Funeral and Cremation Services of Riverside is caring for Richard’s family.
