ARTICLE DESCRIPTION:

It was an up and down season for the Mount Mercy women’s basketball team. The Mustangs finished the year with a record of 13-18 and were 10-16 in Heart of America Athletic Conference play.

Former Highland guard Chelsey Lampe is a sophomore at Mount Mercy and contributed to several of the team’s season highlights.

The Mustangs made the trip to Olathe, Kansas on Saturday, Jan. 21 for a game with MidAmerica Nazarene University. The top-ranked Pioneers handed Mount Mercy its first loss of the season 83-69 in Cedar Rapids on Nov. 12, but the Mustang defense came to play in the rematch.

MNU went just 1-11 from the three point line in the first half as Mount Mercy took a 33-21 lead. The defending national champions came back to take a three-point lead, but the Mustangs got a basket, a turnover, and Quenna Keating hit the game-winner to pull off the upset. Lampe had two points, four rebounds and a steal in 18 minutes.

Nine days later, Mount Mercy upset No. 13 Central Methodist University 68-63.

Mount Mercy never won more than two games in a row, but never lost more than three straight.

Lampe had two rebounds, an assist and a steal as Mount Mercy snapped a three game losing streak in January with a 67-64 win at Peru State. The Mustangs had lost three in a row in February when Lampe went 4-4 from the free throw line, scoring six points in a 82-62 win over Culver-Stockton.

“Chelsey is a key player within our program and the culture of our team,” Mount Mercy’s first-year head coach Micah Mims said.

“She is always in the right place at the right time within our system. She leads by example on and off of the court, always gives her all as she continues to learn and grow, and does it all with a smile on her face. Chelsey is a delight to be around and an even more of a delight to coach.”

Lampe has scored 79 points and has 48 rebounds and 31 assists in two seasons at Mount Mercy.
