ARTICLE DESCRIPTION:

The exterior walls of the Mid-Prairie Middle School gym will get some much needed repairs this summer.

At Monday’s meeting, the school board agreed to set a March 11 public hearing on the repair project after hearing a presentation about the cracks in the gym’s exterior walls.

Mid-Prairie Buildings and Grounds Director Maury Gallagher said that the cracks in the gym walls were first detected about two years ago.

“It was brought to our attention that there was some cracking and separation in the northwest corner of the gym at the middle school,” Gallagher said.

Engineers from Shive-Hattery, an Iowa City architecture and engineering firm, were brought in to determine the cause of the cracking and to monitor its progress.

Structural engineer Onesty Friday told the school board that there were bricks separating on the exterior walls and there was a half-inch vertical gap that could be seen on the interior wall behind the bleachers.

“In August 2017, we did some soil boring near the existing foundation,” Friday said.

The soil tests determined that there were some “fat clay soils” around the foundation.
