Beginning July 1, residential trash pickup in Kalona will change.
When renewing its contract with Johnson County Refuse, the City Council agreed to start using carts for solid waste and recycling.
Residents will have the choice of a 35-gallon or 65-gallon cart for solid waste.
The 35-gallon cart can hold about three 13-gallon (standard kitchen size) trash bags, while the 65-gallon cart can hold about six 13-gallon trash bags.
All recycling carts will be 65-gallon and will include a list of recyclables on the lid.
All residents will receive two 65-gallon carts – solid waste and recycling – unless they specifically apply to have a 35-gallon solid waste cart. Carts will be distributed to residents in June.
Residents with the 65-gallon solid waste cart will be charged $16.50 per month on their water/sewer utility bills. The 35-gallon carts will be billed at $15 per cart.
Anyone wishing to switch out their cart after July 1 will have to pay a $50 fee.
Solid waste and recycling will be picked up on Mondays.
All trash bags must be inside the solid waste carts so that the lid can be shut.
In the case of someone having excess trash, a sticker for a 30-gallon bag can be purchased for $3. That bag must be placed on top of the solid waste cart.
