Five Huskies advanced from Saturday’s sectional tournament and now just a few matches sit between them and a state tournament berth.
The qualifiers for Highland are Caedon Harbison at 120 pounds, Geoff Streb at 132 pounds, Cory Stewart at 138 pounds, Brady Hahn at 145 pounds and Dan Burton at 160 pounds.
Highland coach Derick Ball said he was happy with how the team wrestled on Saturday, saying there were some semi-final matches that were toss-ups and the Huskies won all of those he thought might be close.
“We had a good day, we had some semi-final matches that were contested and we won all of those that were a bubble match,” Ball said.
It won’t be an easy district tournament for the Huskies as all five will need to upset an opponent to move on.
“To get there you’re going to have to knock somebody off, that’s the bottom line,” Ball said.
Harbison is 0-1 against all three opponents this season, with losses by fall to Class 1A No. 1 Cael Happel, Class 1A No. 4 Daniel Meeker and Cody Calvelage. Harbison will wrestle Meeker first.
Streb is 0-1 against all three opponents this season with losses by pin to Class 1A No.6 Ryne Mohrfeld, Class 1A No. 5 Sam Loyd and Reese Thornburg. Thornburg will be his first match.
Stewart is 1-0 over Clay McCoy, 1-2 against Javis Krieger and has not wrestled Class 1A No. 8 Cory Anderson. Anderson will be his first match.
Hahn is 0-1 against Cooper Siebrecht, 0-1 against Kade Chance and 1-0 against Caden Benz. Chance will be his first opponent on Saturday.
Burton is 0-1 against Ryan Schott, 0-2 against Swafford and 1-0 against Eli Faison. He will wrestle against Swafford first.
The Huskies second-place finish in the team standings on Saturday qualified the team into the regional dual tournament. They’ll face a tall task when they travel to Gilbertville to take on Class 1A No. 1 Don Bosco.
Ball called qualifying a “great step forward for our program” and something the team knew they had a chance at qualifying and edged out Iowa City Regina 141 points to 116 points to get second place and qualify.
The district tournament will start at noon Saturday at Wilton High School.
