ARTICLE DESCRIPTION:

A cold, steady rain forced Christmas in Kalona organizers to change plans on the fly Saturday.

Despite the rain, many of the activities were well attended.

“We shifted gears and pushed everything down here to the Chamber to make it centralized,” Kalona Area Chamber of Commerce Director Ben Curtis said. “The turnout here was great. We had a line going all the way past KCTC.”

One of the most anticipated activities, though, had to be scrapped because of the weather.

“The weather, in general, was just a bummer,” Curtis said. “We had to call the ice skating rink early because it looked like rain and nasty stuff all day. It was horrible. We weren’t expecting many people at the ice rink at all after we saw the weather.”

In addition, the evening carriage rides were also canceled.

There was a break in the rain around noon, just in time for the most important event.

“When Santa came, we got some decent weather, so people outside weren’t freezing cold,” Curtis said. “This side of it was a success for sure. We had a really good turnout.”
