With work on the new Community Center in Kalona reaching end stages, the date has been set to reveal the finished project to the public.

On Monday night, the Kalona City Council set an open house and ribbon-cutting date for Saturday, Aug. 25.

“That’s a day we comfortably feel we can have occupancy,” City Administrator Ryan Schlabaugh said. “That will get us past State Fair as well.”

Schlabaugh said that the open house will run from 1-4 p.m., with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 2 p.m.

“We will talk next week about when to actually open to the public,” he added.

Council members toured the facility following Monday’s meeting.

Schlabaugh said that the state fire marshal will inspect the new elevator in early August.

He told council members that 38 new cameras will be installed in the building and that the alarm system will be wired directly to the Washington County Sheriff’s office.

He pointed out that the new 10,000-square-foot gym floor has been installed, and noted that he was impressed with how quickly workers got the difficult job done.

“After watching that, I will never lay a gym floor,” Schlabaugh joked.
