ARTICLE DESCRIPTION:

The School Board, at its meeting April 12, approved a Notice of Award to McComas-Lacina Construction, Iowa City, for the Wellness Center. Eleven construction companies bid on the project. Work on the Center should begin May 1 and be completed on or about Aug. 31, 2018.

Congratulations were extended to Bridget Mahoney and her students. The Iowa Council for Agricultural Education granted Lone Tree the award for best Agriculture Career Awareness. Mahoney teaches Vocational Agriculture and is faculty adviser for the school’s chapter of FFA. Also, the following students received the Iowa FFA Degree Award at the FFA State Convention: Karli Burr, Drake Hotz, Wyatt Westfall, Spencer Arnold, Peyton Schmitt, Logan Carter, Madison Forbes, Jason Fulton, Trey Pierson, and Casey Shalla

Recognition was also extended to those athletes who excelled in basketball: Madison Forbes, Liz Dodson, Riley Warsup, Jovonte Squiers, Niko Gosnell, Brock Smith, Ross Swinton, Dawson Swails.

Amber Jacque, elementary principal, reported that the number of elementary students reaching reading proficiency gained 11.5 percentage points, nearly triple the state’s average. Reading proficiency for Lone Tree’s elementary students is now at 74.6 percent Jacque credited the improvement to the District’s Professional Learning Community program.

Regan Stone, high school principal, shared information about the Ed Thomas Legacy Leadership Academy held in March.

At the end of the school year District Superintendent Michael Reeves will be retiring. His last day will be June 30. Also leaving will be Travis Pierson, Science; Courtney Fey, Language Arts; Angela Knutson, Science; Leah White, Grade 1, Bethany Baum, Math; Allison Sojka, Math.

The next school board meeting will be May 10.
