ARTICLE DESCRIPTION:

TIPTON-- Mid-Prairie boys cross country coach Mark Hostetler said he couldn't be more proud of the way the Mid-Prairie boys team ran at the state qualifying meet at Tipton.

He said the way the dug deep and clawed out every spot possible in the last chunk of the race shows how bad they wanted it.

Despite that, the Mid-Prairie boys finished fourth and fell one place short of qualifying for the state meet behind three ranked teams in No. 1 Tipton, No. 10 Davis County and No. 9 Williamsburg.

Individually, senior Quinn Schmidt finished in fifth place with a time of 17:03 to qualify for next week's state meet. It will be his third state meet while at Mid-Prairie.

"Just knowing that I paced correctly the whole race and passed people the whole race, and I didn't really get passed was great," Schmidt said.

He said the team race was in his mind the whole time and kept him going, with Schmidt moving up nearly 10 spots in the final two miles of the race.

"I just used the hills to my advantage. The one hill at the end of the first lap I went from 12th to seventh place," he said.

Senior Samson Kimani crossed second for the Golden Hawks in 22nd place with a time of 17:50. After that a pack of Mid-Prairie runners - Miles Burrows, Thaddeus Shetler and Jamison Stutzman - scored 24th, 25th and 26th to finish out the team score.

Spencer Yutzy finished in 29th in 18:10 and Jack Pennington was 34th in 18:28.

Tipton won the meet at 37, Davis County was second at 78 and Williamsburg took the final spot at 85. Mid-Prairie scored a 102.

Schmidt moves on to the state meet in Fort Dodge, Iowa on Oct. 27. Read a preview of the meet in next week's The News.
