ARTICLE DESCRIPTION:

It took 15 months, but the Riverside City Council finally completed the sale of the Community Building in downtown Riverside to John Sojka.

What looked like a simple transaction when it was proposed turned out to be much more complicated.

Sojka approached the city about purchasing the vacant building that formerly housed the city’s senior dining program in September 2017.

As the city readied the papers for the sale, no ownership deed could be found.

City officials discovered that shares had been sold to the building years ago. A long process began of tracking down shareholders and dissolving the building ownership.

Monday night, the council completed the process and approved selling the building to Sojka for $32,400. The sale was approved on a 4-0 vote with Councilman Bob Schneider absent.

“The objective is still for the main business in there to be a coffee shop,” Sojka said.

He noted that he already had begun renovations -- totaling more than $6,000 -- on the building and had lost a tenant in the 15 months that the sale had dragged out.
