ARTICLE DESCRIPTION:

There was a time in the early days of Iowa when communities arose or faded because of the availability of one particular form of modern transportation – the railroad.

On Sunday, August 20, at 2:00 p.m., historian Steve Miller will be discussing the westward progress of the first railroad that was established in the English River Valley region in the 1870s.

His program will describe the birth of several new towns along the line with Kalona, Wellman, Kinross, and Keswick being the most prominent examples. He will also tell about the first railroad in the area and the impact it had.

Steve Miller is a 1967 graduate from English Valleys High School who graduated from the University of Iowa as a history major. Throughout his lifetime, he has specialized in researching and telling the stories and memories of our region.

The EV History Center is located at 108 N. Main Street in North English, and all are invited to attend this event at no charge. Donations are accepted.
