The waiting is over. Bids were accepted for the Community Center Project during a special July 13 meeting and demolition on the old gym begins the first week of August.
Total cost came in at $5,323,039, with the current committed funding for the project as $5,200,000. Kalona City Administrator Ryan Schlabaugh said there are numerous grant opportunities and staff was being directed to begin the grant processes to cover the additional cost.
The six construction bids totaled $4,429,315, with an additional contingency fund to cover unexpected issues during construction. Additional costs included furniture, technology systems and legal and architectural fees totaled 638,246.
