ARTICLE DESCRIPTION:

Mid-Prairie FFA member Sophia Norman participated in the World Food Prize Iowa Youth Institute at Iowa State University on April 30.

She was joined by 308 students from 134 schools across the state as they engaged in interactive immersion sessions which covered the topics of plant genetics, human nutrition, food security in Iowa, sustainability and the environment.

Gov. Kim Reynolds and Lt. Gov. Adam Gregg were among the keynote speakers for the seventh annual event, along with Dr. Chavonda Jacobs-Young, acting chief scientist & REE deputy under secretary at USDA, and Wendy Wintersteen, president of Iowa State University.

In order to participate, each student was required to write a research paper identifying a challenge affecting food security in a developing nation.

Students then proposed a solution and presented their findings to a panel of peers and experts at the one-day event. Norman’s paper was on infrastructure issues in Ecuador.

Norman was named as a Borlaug Scholar for her participation in the World Food Prize Iowa Youth Institute.
