September 28, 2017 Supervisors OK grandGable bike ride

ARTICLE DESCRIPTION:

There will be some 700 riders on rural Washington County roads Sunday, October 1, when the annual grandGable bike ride gets underway at 7 a.m. in Iowa City, pedals into Riverside and Wellman, returning to Iowa City’s Terry Trueblood Recreation Area on Sand Road.

The ride, sponsored by the Iowa City/Coraville Area Convention and Visitors Bureau, Scheel’s, Hawkeye Wrestling Club, Iowa Bicycle Coalition and RAGBRI offers three route choices of 100 miles, 60 miles and 55 miles, using marked routes throughout the event, including altering motorists to the bikers. The sponsor also has full liability insurance. The ride is set to conclude by 3 p.m.

In other business, the board:

•Approved the appointment of Darrell Steele, Washington, as a representative to the to the City of Washington Planning & Zoning Commission;

•Tabled action on a Class C liquor license for the Riverside VFW Post 6414 pending receipt of proof of insurance documents;

•Approved the application from the Washington County Conserve action Board to seek a $120,000 grant from the Washington County Riverboat Foundation to help complete the final work on the Kewash Nature Trail improvements;

•Approved changing employment for Julie Messer, office manager for the county engineer’s office, from casual part-time to regular part-time, effective September 25. Messer, who has held the post for 20 years, will continue with the offices until her successor is hired and trained; and

•Acknowledged receiving a $1,000 grant from ICAP to aid with safety related items and/or programs. County Engineer Jacob Thorius said application was made last year to the ICAP program that annually makes $1,000 grants available to counties. The items will be safety gear for road workers.
