Tuesday night was the final game at Hillcrest Union for Iowa Mennonite seniors Alyssa Hershberger, Angela Marcelino, Avery Blauvelt, Payton Hart, and manager Joya Schrock.
Although Iowa Mennonite started with an early lead, Louisa-Muscatine steadily made up ground to come out with a 56-46 win.
Iowa Mennonite junior Suzanna Yoder started off the scoring with a fast break and a clean finish under the basket. Hershberger was then fouled in back-to-back plays, making 3-4 from the line. Facing a tight Iowa Mennonite defense, the Falcons were hardly able to put up a shot. Just before the end of the first quarter though, they seemed to come alive and finished ahead 13-12.
In the second quarter, the roles seemed to reverse. The Falcons took the ball for a seven-point run to start off the quarter. Iowa Mennonite was unable to make a shot until two minutes in when Yoder picked off a Louisa-Muscatine pass and finished with a layup. Iowa Mennonite then watched Louisa-Muscatine go on another scoring streak. Both teams continued to sink shots and the quarter ended Louisa-Muscatine leading 26-18.
“We gave up too many offensive rebounds that led to put backs in the second quarter and that’s what gave Louisa-Muscatine the advantage,” said Iowa Mennonite head coach Kari Heusinkveld. “At the break we addressed the glass as well as half-court execution and being aggressive looking for shots.”
As the second half started off, it seemed Iowa Mennonite’s struggles would continue. The Falcons were sinking shots where Iowa Mennonite couldn’t, but soon their luck changed. Yoder had a steal off another Louisa-Muscatine pass and took the ball for an easy layup. Iowa Mennonite tightened their defense, preventing the Falcons from passing inside. By the end of the third quarter, the Iowa Mennonite girls had closed the Falcons’ lead to just two points.
Louisa-Muscatine missed a series of shots in the fourth, allowing Iowa Mennonite to close in on their lead. Hershberger was fouled and tied the game 40-40 with a free throw. Ultimately, the Louisa-Muscatine offense outscored Iowa Mennonite’s and ended the game 56-46.
