ARTICLE DESCRIPTION:

Less than a year into the realignment of classes between the two Mid-Prairie elementary schools, space is becoming an issue.

Two weeks ago, Mid-Prairie East Principal Robin Foster reported to the school board that there will be 118 first-graders next year. The report prompted the board to approve the hiring of an additional teacher and adding a sixth first-grade class.

“A bigger class is coming in,” Foster said.

With the additional section approved, the school will need to find additional space.

“It’s creating some difficulties because we already have six sections of kindergarten,” Superintendent Mark Schneider said last week. “That puts a strain on those facilities. We’ll have to find a place for another classroom because we have six kindergarten sections coming in.”

The school is exploring its options for housing the additional section.

“One of the options right now is to have the library and music share the same space, and schedule those classes so they’re at different times,” Schneider said. “Another option is to have music go into the classrooms. Right now, there’s a dedicated music room and a dedicated library.”

There has also been some discussion of bringing in a portable building.

“Another option is basically getting a portable (building), but that’s more of a long-term solution than a short-term solution,” Schneider said. “If this trend continues we’ll either have to get portables for that site or add on to that site.”

There is, however, no consideration of splitting up the classes between the two elementary schools again.
