ARTICLE DESCRIPTION:
After giving up the tying run in the seventh inning, the Huskies hunkered down and held Winfield-Mount Union scoreless in the eighth before adding a run to walk-off against the Wolves. The extra-innings win gives Highland a rebound win after three straight losses in which they only tallied three total runs. Their other win last week came against Mediapolis with a 10-2 victory. Highland coach Carrie Wieland said they hit well as a team that night, compiling nine hits. Megan Hoenig got the win from the mound giving up only two hits and striking out 11. The three losses last week included a 10-1 loss to Pekin, a 5-1 loss to Wapello and a 9-1 loss to Class 5A No. 10 Iowa City High. In the Pekin game, Wieland said that a lack of basic fundamentals hurt the Huskies. Grace Batcheller started the game against Pekin, going two innings before Hoenig came on in relief. Highland had four hits on the night, with an Aly Stokes double, the lone extra-base hit for Highland. After two weeks of the season Highland sits at a 3-5 overall record with a 3-4 record in conference. They played at Columbus on Tuesday before five straight home games. They played Cardinal on Wednesday, and play Central Lee on Thursday. They host a doubleheader against Iowa Mennonite on June 11 and host Lone Tree June 12. |
