When all was said and done, there was no vote of confidence taken, and Mid-Prairie Superintendent Mark Schneider’s contract was renewed for another year.

A reporter-estimated crowd of about 200 people gathered in the Mid-Prairie gym for Monday night’s school board meeting, many of them anticipating a vote of confidence or no confidence by the board in Schneider.

Schneider has been under fire for a 2015 decision to allow Trent Yoder, a former teacher at a southwest Iowa school who was convicted of sexual exploitation of a minor for videotaping a student changing clothes in a school bathroom, to volunteer in Mid-Prairie schools.

Instead, Schneider, who had called for the vote of confidence at the board’s April 28 special meeting, requested at the beginning of the meeting that the vote be pulled from the agenda.

With the renewal of Schneider’s contract already on the agenda, the board agreed to cancel the vote.

“We’re still going to take a look at the contract,” board President Jeremy Pickard said.

The board voted 6-1 to approve Schneider’s contract for the 2018-19 school year, with board member Jim Hussey casting the lone dissenting vote.

“I believe Mr. Schneider gave the school board incomplete information when questions about Mr. Yoder were first raised, and then discouraged further questions from the board,” Hussey said.
