ARTICLE DESCRIPTION:

Washington Rotarian and past president, Susan Wellington, spoke at Wellman Rotary October 5. She is the Marketing Manager for Halcyon House in Washington. She spoke about the large expansion that is being undertaken, which includes new buildings and the enlargement of others.

The goal is to keep people independent for as long as possible. Halcyon House is associated with the Methodist Church, but there is no direct affiliation, and persons from all religions are welcome. Their new buildings include new Long Term Care, new Memory Support and new Assisted Living. Two buildings are being renovated as well.

The home provides 800 and 1,600 square foot independent living apartments for people also. Wellington noted that there will be a pond near the South Avenue B apartments. Everything is scheduled to be completed by the end of the year, but inspections have to be completed before occupancy can happen.

Jim Johnson attended the club and announced that he and his wife, owners of Anamosa Publications, have purchased the Wellman Advance, Riverside Current, Kalona News and Lone Tree Reporter newspapers. He said that Wellman, Kalona and Lone Tree will continue to have a news office. The name plates of the papers will continue to appear on pages dedicated to each paper, but all will be combined into one publication called the Kalona News. The Johnsons have been involved in news published since 1969.
