Jacquelyn Garay, an attorney with Midwest Corn Lawsuit, was in Kalona Monday for an information meeting with area corn producers about legal action against Syngenta.

The lawsuits claim Syngenta released in 2009 a genetically engineered corn strain known as Agrisure Viptera and that it was sold to farmers before import approval was acquired from China. As a result, China began rejecting all American corn shipments in 2013 because they contained Agrisure Viptera. That, claims Garay, resulted in more than 3.3 million metric tons of U.S. corn being rejected by China and other countries, which in turn cost U.S. farmers billions of dollars.

Garay said that when Syngenta sought federal approval for the genetically modified strain of seed corn in 2009, it promised to keep it separate from other corn varities. This, she noted, was impossible. Though Agris-
