1926 - 2018

Rita M. Jenn, 92, of Hills, died Tuesday, Dec. 11, 2018, at Atrium Village in Hills. A Mass of Christian burial was held Monday, Dec, 17, 2018 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Riverside with Father Michael Spiekermeier and Father Bill Roush officiating. Burial was at St. Stanislaus Cemetery in rural Hills. A memorial fund has been established for Atrium Village and Iowa City Hospice.

Rita Mary (Ruth) Jenn was born Jan. 26, 1926, in Riverside, Iowa, the daughter of Herman and Bertha (Bulger) Ruth. She graduated from St. Mary’s High School in 1944 and attended St. Clare College in Clinton. Rita taught in rural schools in Johnson County for five years. On Aug. 11, 1948, she was united in marriage to Joe Jenn at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Riverside. Rita was a homemaker and a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Hills where she served as a lector, Eucharistic minister, member of the church council and was the religious education coordinator for 20 years.

She also served on the Davenport diocese council and was a member of the Catholic Daughters and DCCW and served on the Atrium Village care review board. She belonged to the KUB Club, the Rural Johnson County Women’s Club, and the Pinochle group.

Survivors include nine children and spouses: Joanne (John Greenwood) Murdock of Riverside, Eileen Falls of Hills, Anita (Ben) Norman of Ft. Collins, Colo., Joyce (Ralph) Roper of Bald Knob, Ark., Donna (Randy) Arthur of Ainsworth, Linda (Allen) Beeler of Iowa City, Tom (Diane Cerven-Jenn) Jenn of Iowa City, Steve (Chris) Jenn of Hills, and Mary Kay (Tom) Hora of Riverside; two sons-in-law: Bill Fortune of Denver, Colo. and Jerry Murphy of Washington; 32 grandchildren; 39 great-grandchildren; and five siblings: Janelle Marek of Kalona, Mary Marek of Hills, Leo (Shirley) Ruth of Solon, Gene (Doris) Ruth of Riverside; and sister-in-law: Dorris Ruth of Burlington.

Preceding Rita in death were her parents; her husband: Joe; two daughters: Kathy Fortune and Beth Murphy; a grandson: Jeremy Jenn; son-in-law: Bob Falls; four brothers: Paul, Don, Richard and Robert Ruth; and two sisters: Catherine Ruth and Eleanor Droll.

The family would like to thank the staff at Atrium Village and Angie Valencia and Dee Bickford of Iowa City Hospice for their loving care of Rita.
