ARTICLE DESCRIPTION:

It looked like Mid-Prairie would take a 24-21 lead into the final quarter Friday night in Mount Vernon. Mid-Prairie had just stopped the Mustangs on the doorstep. Jared Miller recovered a fumble on the one yard line.

However, the Golden Hawks went three and out and Mustangs took a timeout after a Mid-Prairie penalty with just four seconds left in the quarter. That’s when Cale Snedden returned the Terrhyn Jacoby punt 44 yards for a score.

Three fourth quarter touchdowns would put away the Golden Hawks as they played catchup, throwing increasingly as the deficit grew throughout the quarter in the 49-31 loss.

Mid-Prairie fought their way back from a 14-0 early deficit with a pair of touchdown passes from Karson Gingerich. A 65 yarder to Carter Reinier made it 14-7 and after a Mustang touchdown, Gingerich drove the Golden Hawks down the field and completed a fourth and goal pass to Justin Schwartz as time expired to make the score 21-14 in favor of Mount Vernon at the half.

After a Mid-Prairie stop, the Golden Hawks tied it up, thanks in large part to a Ricky Vargas 82 yard run on the first play from scrimmage, before Levi Duwa ran it in from the fullback position two plays later. Vargas was a workhorse for the team all night, racking up 185 yards on 23 carries.

Reinier jumped a wide receiver screen on the next Mount Vernon drive and set up Mid-Prairie at their opponent’s 33. Though Mid-Prairie could not find the end zone, they moved the ball well enough to give Jacoby an attempt at a 40 yard field goal, which he made to give Mid-Prairie the lead.
