Highland racked up 494 yards of offense and scored seven touchdowns in a 48-16 rout of Columbus Community.

Highland (1-0) was able to move the ball up and down the field with ease during their season opener against the Wildcats (0-1). The Huskies rushed for 363 yards total, with four running backs going over 50 yards.

Trey Lasek led the way with 97 yards on nine carries and Brady Hahn was just behind with nine carries for 96 yards and a touchdown. Cole Adamson had the best rushing average for Huskies, averaging 13 yards per carry with 91 yards on seven carries and a touchdown. Adamson scored the longest touchdown of the night at 60 yards. Jordan Sosa carried the ball five times for 54 yards.

The Huskies eased off the passing game, with Lasek going 5-8, but three of his passes going for touchdowns. He found Mason McFarland twice on the night, with both going for touchdowns. Cory Stewart caught one pass, going for a 60 yard touchdown.

While the offensive numbers stand out, one of the biggest stats of the night for the Huskies was a zero. Highland didn’t punt the ball once all night, showing a consistent offensive performance.

The Huskies hopped out to a 34-0 halftime lead and continued a 42-0 shutout into the fourth quarter, when Highland got some younger players experience. Connor Grinstead played the final quarter at quarterback, going 1-2 for 17 yards passing and rushing the ball three times for two yards and a touchdown.

Brody Burton took care of kicking duties on the night for the Huskies, going 4-6 on point-after kicks. Jose Cardenas took care of kickoffs and had eight kickoffs at about a 49 per kick average.

The Huskies had six tackles for loss total on the night with Stewart leading the way with three and Isaac Black, Cael Yeggy and Devin Lovetinsky adding one.

With the first game and a win in the books, the Huskies will have a much tougher test this week. They’ll take on Alburnett, who won 49-7 over Vinton-Shellsburg last week. The BCMoore computer rankings put Alburnett as the No. 2 team in Class A. The Cedar Rapids Gazette ranked Alburnett No. 6 in this week’s rankings.
