Martin H. Brophy

1929 - 2017

Martin H. Brophy, 87, of Riverside, passed away at Pioneer Park on Monday, March 20, 2017. A Funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, March 24, 2017, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Riverside. Burial will be in the Mt. Olivet Cemetery with military honors provided by the Riverside V.F.W. Post 6414. Visitation will be held on Thursday, March 23, 2017, from 4:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. at Sorden-Lewis Home for Funeral and Cremation Services, Riverside with a 3:30 p.m. Rosary Service. A memorial has been established at the funeral home in Martin’s name. Online condolences may be sent to www.lewisfuneralhomes.com.

Martin Brophy was born on June 18, 1929, in Riverside, the son of Leo and Margaret (Walsh) Brophy. He was a graduate of St. Mary’s Catholic School in Riverside. He was an U.S. Veteran serving in the United States Army. On September 21, 1968, Martin was united in marriage to Patricia Beyer in Burlington. Martin was a farmer his entire life. He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church of Riverside. He enjoyed bowling, gambling, gardening and playing cards with family and friends. His greatest love was the time he spent with his wife, children and grandchildren.

Martin will be deeply missed by his wife: Pat of Riverside; children: Robert (Jan) Brophy of Wellman, Joe (Beth) Brophy of West Liberty, Dan (Allie) Brophy of Australia and Beth (Chad) Mellinger of Riverside; grandchildren: Brad (Robin) Brophy, Jennifer (Eric) Wulff, Julie (Derek) Gordinier, Jessica Parizek, Lucas (Jill) Parizek, Mandy Hale, Kyle Brophy, Chris Mellinger, Colton Mellinger and Carsen Mellinger; great-grandchildren: Gabi, Tatum, Colin, Connor, Addison, Riley, Treyden and Amzie; siblings: Dorothy Burke of Davenport, Rose Pedersen of North Liberty and Loretta (Jerry) Glowacki of Bettendorf; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers: Edward, John and Francis Brophy; and two sisters: Agnes Murphy and Theresa Werthmann.
