ARTICLE DESCRIPTION:

U.S. Rep. Dave Loebsack (D-District 2) met with a handful of area farmers in Washington Friday, Jan. 18 to hear their thoughts on a number of topics.

Loebsack’s visit at the Washington County Farm Bureau was part of his “Investing in Rural Iowa” tour to discuss issues important to farmers and rural Iowans.

He started by talking about the recently passed Farm Bill.

“The good news is we didn’t take a few extra years to get the thing done,” Loebsack said. “We did take a few extra months, unfortunately. We maintained crop insurance and got some reforms.

“There aren’t a lot of changes. There are a lot of continuations. We haven’t really changed a whole lot. The idea was not to make major changes.”

One of the changes, he said, was an attempt to close discrepancies in Agriculture Risk Coverage (ARC) payments.

He said that the previous Farm Bill led to some counties making large ARC payments, while others paid next to nothing.

“That’s the intent,” he said. “We’ll try to even things out between counties.”

Loebsack was asked about where the “new NAFTA” trade agreement – the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement that was signed in November 2018 – stands.
