ARTICLE DESCRIPTION:

Editor:

In the wake of dramatic headlines that stir up easy outrage, it’s important to remember that no crime was committed and no children were harmed here as a result of Superintendent Mark Schneider’s decision. Instead, a dedicated father who made a terrible mistake two decades ago has worked to make a positive difference in his and other children’s lives.

We can know that our children’s safety was not placed at risk, for two reasons. First, the judge and prosecutors that investigated Trent’s case learned that his crime was a single isolated incident, not one of a larger pattern of sexually abusive behavior. That knowledge, and Trent’s exemplary record post-conviction, led to the removal of his name from the sex offender registry a decade later. Second, and regardless of the first, all parties agreed that Trent’s volunteer work with children would always take place with multiple adults present, good policy for any of us. There simply was never an opportunity for inappropriate activity.

Those that know Trent and Tammy know Kalona is richer because they live here, whether through the money they’ve raised each year in memory of the young daughter they tragically lost, the food drives they’ve led to help stock our local food pantry, the homes they’ve made more beautiful through each of their businesses, or indeed, their volunteer work in our schools.

I’ve lived here for over 20 years and I recognize the special character of this place. I believe our community can show the meaning of restorative justice. I believe we have the depth of spirit to acknowledge a person’s past mistakes, even serious ones, and say, “You still have a role to play among us, you belong here.”
