As hard as the Iowa Mennonite School team fought, they could not regain their early lead in Friday night’s game against WACO in a 54-42 loss.
Alyssa Hershberger scored the first bucket of the night, hardly noticing she did so with a men’s ball, an unusual choice for a girl’s basketball game. After the error had been corrected, she scored again, putting Iowa Mennonite in the lead 4-0.
The Warriors then turned on the aggression, scoring three points before the quarter ended.
Iowa Mennonite’s Suzanna Yoder faced an aggressive WACO defense, but was able to drive to the basket in the lane, racking up the points and the free throws. The Warriors’ 3-point abilities surpassed that of Iowa Mennonite’s, and WACO took on a lead they would hold for the remainder of the game.
After two consecutive 3-pointers from the Warrior offense, Iowa Mennonite head coach Kari Heusinkveld called a time out. After the time out Yoder dropped a 3-pointer, putting Iowa Mennonite just one point behind WACO. Avery Blauvelt chased down an uncontrolled WACO ball, but her efforts were lost when Yoder was called for a controversial over and back. The Warriors took advantage of their final possession of the half splashing another three, extending their lead to 23-15.
Iowa Mennonite seemed to come out of the locker room with newfound energy. Blauvelt had another steal off a Warrior pass and found Yoder under the basket for two. WACO continued to splash their 3-point shots, leaving Iowa Mennonite with more and more ground to make up.
Fresh off the break at the start of the fourth quarter, Hershberger drew an offensive foul and made her first free throw. Her second was just short, and the Warriors took possession. In an attempt to slow the pace, Blauvelt was called for her fourth foul, but WACO missed both shots from the line. Yoder drove once again into a crowded lane, missing the finish but put back on the line, shooting her 10th and final free throw of the night. She was 80 percent from the line.
