Kalona

Effective Dec. 16, Welkona Turkeys, Inc. of Wellman and Kalona has secured the services of Mr. Wally Godlove as supervisor of the Kalona operation. For the last several years, he has been the owner-operator of the Wellman Locker.

Announcement was made on Thursday of the winners of the store and home-decorating contest sponsored by the Kalona Community Club. Home award winners: first, A. J. Haberman; second, I. E. Grady; and third, Dr. C. W. Beckman.

In the commercial division: first, Reifs; second, Medical Center; third, Farmers Savings Bank; and fourth, Kalona News.

The second drawing of turkeys and cash were awarded to: Mrs. Dayle Chalupa, Lee Thompson, Mrs. Milt Ehrenfelt, E. M. Cox, Mrs. Maude Yoder, Harold J. Maxwell, Mrs. Branson Batterson, Kevin O’Hare, Mrs. Dan J. M. Yoder, Warren Schaefer, Hubert Malichky, Mrs. Roy Snider and Connie Ehrenfelt.

Mr. and Mrs. Roy Pewitt and family entertained guests at dinner in the duo-observance, that of the birthday of their son, Howard and a pre-Christmas dinner. Guests included Mrs. and Mrs. Wayne Gardner and family and Mr. and Mrs. Ivan Burkley.

Judy Miller, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Dennis M. Miller, received a broken arm in a mishap at the Iowa Mennonite School.

The Kalona Kubs were defeated in a real thriller by the Wellman Wildcats in an overtime, 54-56. The Kubs, shooting and rebounding better the second half, ended the game in a deadlock, 52-52. At the end of the three-minute overtime, Wellman emerged as the victor, pinning a 56-54 defeat on the Kubs. Bill Reif led the balanced scoring attack of the Kubs with only two points more than four other teammates. John Alsip, who collected 29 points for the Wildcats, was their top scorer.

A banquet dinner meeting for all employees of Yoder Feeds, Inc. was given last Dec. 5 at Hillcrest Union by Lester D. Yoder, president of Yoder Feeds.

Mr. and Mrs. J. D. Boyd and family were Sunday evening supper guests of Mr. and Mrs. Harold Brenneman and family.

Sunday dinner guests of Mr. and Mrs. Logan Reif and sons were Mr. and Mrs. E. H. Reif and Marie Jackson.

A pre-Christmas dinner was held in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Paul D. Miller and family with guests including Mr. and Mrs. Sam Bender and family, Mr. and Mrs. Elwyn Brenneman and family, Mr. and Mrs. Ray Brenneman, Mr. and Mrs. Morris Swartzendruber and family, Mr. and Mrs. Ellis Swartzendruber and sons, Mr. and Mrs. Cecil Miller and sons, and Mr. and Mrs. Ben M. Miller and Marjorie.
