The senior dining center in Wellman is going through a makeover.

The Senior Dining Commission Monday night voted to make a number of recommendations to the City Council, starting with changing the name to the Goodwin Center.

“I want people to realize you don’t have to be a senior to come here,” Wellman City Administrator Kelly Litwiller said. “We take anybody.”

The name change comes as more Kalona residents are eating lunch at the Wellman center. Over the past year, about 12% of those eating at the center were Kalona residents.

Litwiller told the commission that the Kalona City Council has approved $4,500 for this fiscal year to the center. She said that expenditure will be reviewed annually.

“That’s going to help immensely,” commission Leroy Powell said.

The commission also discussed serving residents in West Chester and Keota. Over the summer, the West Chester summer food program for students and adults had the meals prepared in Wellman.

The commission approved a recommendation for a $1 increase in the fee charged for meals, increasing the price from $5 to $6. Like the name change, that increase needs to be approved by the City Council.

Litwiller said the increase reflects higher costs for preparing meals.

“Financially we’re just trying to stay ahead of the game,” she said.
