The Voyage Home Star Trek Museum in Riverside has stepped into the future after a month-long process with an updated point of sale system.

The old cash register is gone and replaced with a new system to take the museum into more modern times.

“It made things a little difficult in bookkeeping,” Mike Meinders, the museum’s secretary, said about the old system. “Keeping track of inventory was next to impossible.”

Meinders said the new system would now allow inventory to be kept much easier.

“It actually tells us, ‘Hey, you’re low on the stock of this item,” he said.

Everything in the museum’s inventory is now equipped with a barcode and each item in stock is also categorized between the different groups who sell out of the museum: the Riverside Area Community Club or the museum itself.

Under the new system, Meinders receives an email any time an item in the inventory gets low in stock so more can be ordered. The museum will also be able to gather data on the effectiveness of item pricing, to avoid the inventory remaining stagnant for too long.

For the new system, Meinders and a group of part-time volunteers had to manually count and make note of the museum’s entire inventory, a daunting task, to say the least.

The money to purchase the new system came from a restructuring of the museum’s 501c3 nonprofit.
