ARTICLE DESCRIPTION:

Both Aaron Slaughter and Bryce Thompson lost their semifinal matches at the WACO Invite. They both bounced back for third place finishes.

“I thought they wrestled well, they had good competition in the semifinals and both made one mistake that cost them the match,” Lone Tree coach Steve Farrell said.

Farrell said the biggest part of feeling like they wrestled well was their response to the losses and how they both fixed their mistakes.

Slaughter, according to Farrell, lost the 8-7 decision because he got himself into a bad position after a scramble. In the third place match he held his position well and was able to work that to a second-period pin.

Slaughter was able to pin three of his four opponents on the day including a 16-second pin in his second match of the day over Sebastian Beatty.

Thompson also finished his day out with a win after dropping a 7-2 decision in the semifinals. Farrell said during the semifinal bout Thompson wasn’t as aggressive with his shot fakes and that took away a lot of his offense.

In the third place match Thompson came out aggressive against Ethan Kupka, who had beaten Thompson earlier that week in overtime. That allowed him to get a takedown and two-point nearfall in the first period to jump out to a 4-0 lead in the 8-4 decision. He added a second period takedown and third period reversal to win.

The two Lone Tree wrestlers were the only ones that made the trip to WACO on Saturday while six other Lions went to Independence for a junior varsity tournament.

Ryan Kirkpatrick, Tim Mills and Chris Reichert took first place in their four man round-robin brackets. The three first place winners combined to pin their opponents in eight of nine matches.

Ty Griffen, Will Hotz and Trey Shalla placed third in their brackets.

Lone Tree will next be in action on Friday at the Louisa-Muscatine junior varsity invitational.
