Mid-Prairie runners Nathan Wallington and Jamison Stutzman helped keep a now 15-year-old streak alive last weekend by running at the state cross country meet in Fort Dodge.

Wallington, a Mid-Prairie freshman, was the first Golden Hawk across the finish line on Saturday and ran a 17:47. Wallington was full of smiles after race, surprising himself with his own time.

“I feel relieved that I got a good time,” he said. “I got a personal record last meet, so I wasn’t expecting to run well this meet and I did exactly the same as I did before.”

He crossed in 60th place in Class 2A, putting him in the top half of runners at the meet.

It was the third time this season that Wallington broke into the sub-18 minute times. He began the season with an 18:47 at Cedar Rapids Prairie before steadily dropping his times.

Wallington said that for the first mile he probably went too slow, but because of that he had more energy and was able to consistently pass people over the final two miles of the course at Lakeside Municipal Golf Course in Fort Dodge.

“Right at the first mile, I knew I was behind where I was supposed to be and I needed to make up ground,” he said. “It felt great and made it a lot more fun that it usually is, just passing people the whole time.”

Jamison Stutzman stuck with Wallington for most of the race, but some tightness in his legs caused him to drop back.

Stutzman, who ran the fastest time of any Mid-Prairie runner this season at 17:19 finished in 129th place at the state meet with a time of 19:42.
