The ballot is set for the Tuesday, Aug. 28 special Mid-Prairie school board election.

Two candidates will be on the ballot for the school board seat: Emily Uhl and Randy Billups.

Uhl was appointed by the school board to fill the vacancy created when George Schaefer resigned in June. Uhl was sworn in on July 13 and will participate in August board meetings.

“I am extremely honored to be currently serving on the school board in light of George Schaefer’s resignation,” Uhl said. “I believe this district needs fresh, unbiased and objective perspectives to move forward and heal from the past two years of divisiveness. It’s vital that we have the courage to question policies that are not working for us, have real – sometimes uncomfortable – conversations, and not allow our personal interests to cloud our decision-making. I am eager to take on this challenge and serve our community and children to the best of my ability.”

Billups is a former school board member who served on the board for nine years before stepping down six years ago to take a job with the district. He said he recently started working another job and can once again serve on the school board.

He was present at the July 9 meeting when the board was considering voting on the appointment. He volunteered to be considered for the spot, but the board ultimately selected Uhl in a 4-1 vote, with board member Jodi Meader casting the lone dissenting vote.

“I was planning to run in the next election,” Billups said. “There was a group of people who would like to see me on the board. When I wasn’t selected, they started a petition (to trigger an election).

“I’m interested in the school. I have grandkids in the school district, and I’ve been associated with the school district for about 35 years. I think this is a great school district.”
