Recycling is very important to Riley Donovan.

He works with Richland on Tuesdays over the summer and helps the city pick up the garbage. The job is one he enjoys immensely and he wanted to channel that passion for the betterment of his school.

Because of the amount of trash he sees in the landfills through his work and the amount of plastic bottles that ended up in the trash, he wanted to expand the recycling efforts of the school district by setting up receptacles in each the high school and the middle school.

The district, which had previously only recycled paper, now had a place where students can recycle cardboard, plastic and aluminum. By decreasing the amount of materials that goes into landfills, Donovan also helps protect the environment, another big reason behind his desire to expand the school’s recycling program.

Through the Recycle Away program, Donovan helped design a bin for each building. Donovan then was able to get a grant through Pepsi to help pay for the bins.

Donovan is in charge of emptying the bins at both the middle school and high school, which he does every other day, unless there is a sporting event at the school. Bins are emptied before each event and the next day.
