Goals in quick succession turned a potentially close game to a 6-1 blowout as West Liberty bested Mid-Prairie last week.

The Golden Hawks dealt with some lineup changes and saw a defensive formation from West Liberty that coach Pat Cady said caused some problems getting the offense going.

“They’re a good team and it was a different for our guys looking at so many people in a small space and it just kind of caused a little confusion on the evening,” Cady said.

He said the 6-1 score doesn’t reflect how close the game was because of a few instances of nearly back-to-back goals.

“That can be attributed to having new personnel and the communication wasn’t good. If you were to sit and watch the game and take those silly mistakes away, it could have been a 2-1 game,” Cady said.

Cady was happy with how the team worked with possession and passing the ball, but the final third of the field was a struggle.

“Our goal this week is going to be creativity for the final third and if we get them set up with two or three types of rotations they can build with that,” Cady said.

Mid-Prairie’s lone goal on the night came on a cross from Nick Ives and was put in the back of the net by Ashten VanWinkle, his fourth goal of the season.

He said with such a young team, it was good to see some of the younger players adjust to switching positions. He said Ethan Trimpe, a freshman, did a nice job moving to center back on the night. He also praised Zeus Fugate moving up to forward later in the game due to a substitution.

“The kids that we’ve been getting in, we’ve been pleased with,” Cady said.

Mid-Prairie’s game against Clear Creek Amana on April 9, was postponed. They will play next on April 16, at home against Monticello.
