ARTICLE DESCRIPTION:

Mid-Prairie West Elementary School was evacuated Monday morning for a short time due to a gas leak.

Superintendent Mark Schneider said that the gas leak was discovered at 10:15 a.m., Monday.

“It was a small leak,” Schneider said. “We contacted city officials. They only had to tighten up some bolts.”

Principal Bill Poock said that students were evacuated to the Parkview Recreation Center for a short time.

“It was good for students and staff to have an unplanned drill,” Poock said.

The evacuation went smoothly, according to Poock.

“For the time it took for Mark to get from (the district’s central office) to (the elementary school), we were all gone,” Poock said.

The leak was repaired in a short time, and all the students were back in their classrooms at 11:10 a.m., Schneider said.
