In the 2016-2017 school year, Mid-Prairie was a recipient of the Teacher Leadership Compensation Grant from the State of Iowa. This voluntary grant was established by the 2013 Legislature to improve student learning by compensating and promoting teacher leaders to lead efforts in professional learning and effective teaching. Last year, Mid-Prairie developed four new teacher leadership roles; Curriculum/Professional Learning Leader, Learning Design Coaches, Model Teachers and Professional Partners.
The Mid-Prairie teacher leader roles were created to maximize student learning throughout the district as well as offer stronger professional learning opportunities for educators. Through these roles, areas such as Literacy, Technology, PBIS (Elementary), PRIDE (Middle School), Seminar (High School) and new teacher mentorships, teacher leaders were able to corroboratively lead and empower teachers to advance student learning. The collaborative efforts of Mid-Prairie’s district teacher leaders revealed unparalleled impacts. District feedback from district educators indicated that more than 9 out of 10 teachers agreed or strongly agreed that teacher leaders were helpful to them. Student growth in the areas of literacy also showed increased achievement, while collaborative efforts from teacher leaders worked to fine-tune instructional strategies and analyze student data in order to move students forward.
